DOVER, Del. – The Wesley College women's basketball team was unable to hold an early lead against Gwynedd Mercy, falling to the Griffins 84-68 in Atlantic East Conference action on Saturday.
Riding the momentum of a 12-6 run to close out the quarter, Wesley held to a 21-14 lead at the end of the first frame.
Wesley got up as much as ten points in the second quarter when Monshea Newsome-Murray made a jump shot to stretch the lead to 26-16 with 7:50 to go in the half. Gwynedd Mercy erased Wesley lead in the second quarter when they got out on a 26-12 run to take the 42-38 lead with 30 seconds left in the half. Wesley cut their lead down to 42-40 right before the halftime buzzer when Angelique Gathers found Katelyn Watson in the paint for a layup.
Wesley couldn't find their footing in the second half and Gwynedd Mercy got hot from beyond the three-point line to secure the conference victory.
Monshea Newsome-Murray recorded a team-high 18 points on 7-of-16 shooting. She added seven assists, five rebounds and two steals.
Lekeshia Brown-Myrick and Angelique Gathers joined Newsome-Murray in scoring double figures for the Wolverines. Brown-Myrick tallied 12 points while Gathers notched 11 points off the bench. Both Brown-Myrick and Gathers pulled down four rebounds apiece.
Olivia Roseman led Gwynedd Mercy with 13 points and 12 assists to record a double-double.
Wesley will play their final road game of the season on Wednesday, Feb. 13 at 6 p.m. when they travel to Arlington, Va. to take on the Marymount Saints in Atlantic East Conference action.
