DOVER, Del. – Five Wolverines scored in double figures as the Wesley College men's basketball team defeated Southern Virginia, 84-73, on Saturday afternoon at Wentworth Gymnasium. The Wolverines move to 8-9 on the year and 6-4 in the Capital Athletic Conference while the Knights fall to 2-14 on the year and 0-10 in league play.
Wayne Lennon led Wesley with a double-double 18 points and ten rebounds while fellow swingman Quincy Pettiford tallied 15 points while grabbing eight boards. AJ Tilghman added 11, as did JW Lawson off the bench, while Jordan Johnson chipped in with ten.
Wesley got out to a similar start as the women in the first game of the doubleheader, getting out to a 9-2 run as Lennon drained a couple of threes. The Wolverines would extend the lead to as many as 40-23 on back-to-back breakaway dunks by Lawson, but SVU scored the final four points of the period, giving Wesley a 40-27 lead at the break.
Southern Virginia closed to within six points with 7:58 remaining but the Wolverines went on an 8-0 run which included another slam by Lawson to seal the win.
The Wolverines will look to even its record when it travels to first-place Marymount (Va.) on Wednesday, January 28 for an 8 pm conference game.
