Field Hockey holds strong to defeat Virginia Wesleyan 3-1 in season opener
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Wesley 2019 Field Hockey team opened their season with a non-conference away game at Virginia Wesleyan.

Wesley got on the board in the 24:33 minute of the second period when Madison Cook took it to the net, assist by Kaila Hindt.

Wesley would get on the board again when Madison Cook scores unassisted, bringing the game to a 2-1 lead to end the third period.

Final goal was scored early on in the fourth period by, Vanessa Santoleri (unassisted) making this her first collegiate goal.

"It was a good team win. Our defense played a good game lead by junior goalie Lauren Berry. They credited her with one save but she stepped up several times to cut plays off before they could shoot. Jada, Alexiss and Alexis, along with the midfielders played well defensively." said Coach Short

On offense, Madi Cook had some good shots, and the speed of Kaila, Kristen and Carly helped to keep the ball on the offensive end.

"Virginia Wesleyan is a good team and while we have work to do, we were excited to walk away with the win!"

The Wolverines head to Ferrum on Saturday, September 7th. Game is slatted to start at 1:00 p.m.
