Softball Opens Season With Pair of Victories
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Wesley College's softball team split a pair of games with Wentworth and defeated Penn State-Berks on Monday at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic in Myrtle Beach. The Wolverines trumped the Leopards, 15-4, in head coach Juli Greep's first game at Wesley before falling in game two, 4-2. Wesley then went on to defeat the Lions, 3-1, with a brilliant complete-game effort by pitcher Nicole Piscopo.
A freshman from Naperville, Ill., Piscopo allowed an unearned run on just three hits in seven innings of work against the Lions. Ashlyn Booth and Tamerra Starr both went 2-3 with an RBI against Penn State.
Piscopo also pitched in relief and did not allow a single run in the season-opening victory over the Leopards while Shannon Wright batted 3-4 with three steals and a RBI.
Freshman pitcher Meghan McGonigle started both the first and second games for the Wolverines and had four strikeouts in the second game. Jessica Barranco homered for Wesley in the loss to the Leopards.
The Wolverines (2-1) are back in action tomorrow when they play a doubleheader against Penn State-Altoona starting at 9:30 am. Fans can follow the action provided by assistant coach Courtney Kozar on Twitter @GoWesley.
