Wesley Knocks Off No. 18 Salisbury
DOVER, Del. - Matt Nimmerichter's penalty kick at 74:03 was his second goal in less than two minutes and finished a comeback from a 2-0 deficit as Wesley defeated No. 18 Salisbury 3-2 in a Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) match.
The Sea Gulls (8-2-1, 1-2 CAC) took a 1-0 lead into halftime behind a goal by Kyle Sterling at 22:54, assisted by Chris Napolitano.
Early in the second half, Salisbury extended it to 2-0 when Sterling set up Chris Finney's goal at 46:07.
Wesley (6-3-1, 2-1 CAC) cut the lead in half during the 58th minute. Omar De Los Santos, who had subbed back into the game just a few minutes before, took a cross from Kyle Lawrence and boomed it in from eight yards at 57:12.
Nimmerichter's first career goal was a big one, tying the game at 72:23 when he just got his head onto a kick by Kyle Hazard from 40 yards enough to get it past Salisbury's Greg Wellinghoff.
A yellow card on Wellinghoff at 74:03 resulted in a penalty kick by Nimmerichter. The sophomore deposited his chance into the lower left corner to get the Wolverines the lead on his second goal fo the evening.
Almost immediately, Salisbury put a shot on net that was saved by Talarico. The Sea Gulls got off four more shots before the end of regulation, but could not force overtime.
Talarico made 10 saves in net for the Wolverines, who were outshot 24-9 in the contest.
Wellinghoff made three saves for Salisbury before giving way to reserve Joshua Scotton for the final 7:15.
Wesley is now unbeaten in its last five matches with a 4-0-1 record during that time.
