Wesley Falls at Christopher Newport
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Wesley College erased an nine point deficit in the second half, but Christopher Newport fought back to claim an 83-79 win over the Wolverines in the championship game of the CNU Point Plaza Invitational.
Wesley (2-3) took a 65-64 lead on a three by Kevin Johnson (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna) with 6:55 left in the game to erase what had been a 58-49 Captains' (4-1) lead three minutes earlier. The basket was part of a spree in which Johnson scored seven straight points for the Wolverines.
The two teams traded leads six times during the next two and a half minutes and Wesley led 69-68 after a bucket by Paul Reynolds (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna) with 5:19 to go. A Tra Benefield jumper with 4:26 remaining reclaimed the lead back for the Captains.
Wesley had a chance to tie the game with 1:55 left, but Jamal Wilson's (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) second free throw missed and the Captains kept the Wolverines at arms length the rest of the way for the win.
Darrell Johnson (New Castle, Del./Howard) scored 15 points on 7-of-13 shooting to go along with eight rebounds and two blocks and was named to the all-tournament team after the game.
Reynolds overcame a 4-of-13 shooting effort by hitting 8-of-10 from the foul line to score a team-high 16 points. Chris Douglas (Landover, Md./Jericho Prep Academy) poured in 15 points on 6-of-10 from the floor and Rudy Thomas (Milton, Del./Sussex Tech) added a dozen points.
Benefield led Christopher Newport with a game-high 21 points on 7-of-13 shooting, including three three-point field goals. Bryan Herrman had 19 points and Conley Taylor added 18. All three players grabbed seven boards, one less than Mike Green's team-best eight rebounds.
The Wolverines are back in action on December 1 at York (Pa.).
